The City of Nanaimo, British Columbia recently started using FME Suite's KML support to provide residents with access to some of its geographic information via Google Earth. Using FME Suite, the City's web site is providing KML links to visitors. KMLs include a virtual tour of the downtown core, 3D building models, and links to downtown businesses as well as orthophoto data for the Nanaimo region. We're pleased to take a closer look at these cool applications taking advantage of the latest API's made avvailable from Google. For some coll examples of what the city is doing check out the full article at http://www.gisuser.com/content/view/6647/28/. This is a very cool story of a city's testing of the waters, so to speak. The applications are not a replacement of the city's fine efforts to date in mainating an eccellent webmapping service. It is, however, an example of how the APIs can be used to extend the reach of their GIS.August 17, 2005

Comparing high-res imagery to images served via Google Earth and Virtual Earth
A tip from someone at geosage led me to this resource. They've created a webpage demonstrating examples of improving and enhancing imagery at Google Maps or MSN Virtual Earth ... The eval shows a nice high-res image for an area and then compares it to imagery from the same area being served up via Google Maps and Virtual Earth. Check it out at http://www.geosage.com/highview/comparisons_google.html
