WhereCamp 2007 Europe... an EU masher event

I think anyone would be hard-pressed to "replace" O'reilly Media's Where 2.0 - since its a totally spectacular event! - however, an ambitions group in Europe is in the planning stages of what others have billed as an "alternative" to Where 2.0 - after all its a long way from Europe to San Jose and the cost of the event is a bit staggering as well (roughly $1500 clams!). From the promoter of WhereCamp... WhereCamp is an alternative, low-cost conference for geohackers, to be held in London, UK, in summer 2007. For more about what wherecamp is see http://grault.net/wherecamp/2007/?What_Is_WhereCamp. A great idea... calling it a replacement to Where 2.0 is a stretch though... best of luck to the organizers.

Some great GIS career opportunities

This week we've seen a flurry of activity in the GIsuser Career Center (maybe because job posting is free!). Some of the recent career opportunities you might wish to look into include:

Garmin to air TV commercial during Super Bowl XLI on February 4

Once again, GPS is going prime time.. this time with a featured spot in an ad during Super Bowl. Looks like location has been a pretty lucrative technology recently if this is any indication. Industry-heavyweight Garmin has scored big and will be airing a 30 second TV ad this week-end on superbowl Sunday. The ad will feature Garmin Man and a Maposaurus! The theme of the commercial is "Grab your Garmin, Take on the World" – demonstrating how Garmin personal navigation devices can save the everyday consumer time, money, and hassles. Taken to the extreme, the commercial is a humorous 1960s-style sci-fi piece. The commercial's quirky low-tech production treatment is in playful contrast to Garmin's cutting edge GPS technology and other advertisers' use of complex computer effects. Catch the ad on Sunday.. oh.. and GO COLTS!!! You can see some images of garmin man and maposaurus here
