More out of the O'reilly camp on the GIS 2.0 front... GIS for Web Developers - New from Pragmatic Bookshelf

A new book from O'reilly just announced today boasts you'll learn how to find the vast amounts of free geographic data that's out there and how to bring it all together. You'll see how to convert it among several popular formats—including plain text, ESRI Shapefiles, and Geography Markup Language (GML). I can't wait to see how yet another expert proposes to the industry how to find these free data - PS - if you point me to another antiquated datadepot I'm gonna puke!
In GIS for Web Developers, author Scott Davis introduces Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in simple terms and demonstrates hands-on uses. With this book, you'll explore popular websites like maps.google.com, see the technologies they use, and learn how to create your own. Written with the usual Pragmatic Bookshelf humor and real-world experience, GIS for Web Developers make the journey an easy one. You can now geographically-enable your own applications using freely available, open source tools and data. But until now, finding the right data on the web has been a problem. Apple iPhone development - Does Security nullify an Open environment?

What actually defines open? It seems there's a mixed bag or responses that all seem to have some validity... for example, in a message regarding the recent announcement of an SDK and development environment for the iPhone, Steve Jobbs had this to say... "Some companies are already taking action. Nokia, for example, is not allowing any applications to be loaded onto some of their newest phones unless they have a digital signature that can be traced back to a known developer. While this makes such a phone less than “totally open,” we believe it is a step in the right direction." So do I understand that we'll likely be seeing an "iPhone signed" requirement for the application developers... if so I wonder how much it will cost to get your apps signed?
What makes Nokia and the symbian OS the global leader is the fact that there exists a robust, open development environment in the S60 platform. Granted, Nokia won't allow applications to run on S60 unless they are signed but does this make things any less open... I'll take the security any day. Apple unveiling a SDK for iPhone application developers

Apple announced today its unveiling a SDK in February to allow the development of native third-party Applications on the iPhone McAfee comments on a move to create a developer framework for the iPhone... I received this from McAfee today... McAfee has not yet seen any attacks created specifically for the iPhone. However, history has shown that product success draws in attackers. At McAfee, we've been dealing with cyberattacks for almost 20 years. "Apple opening up the iPhone and iPod Touch is great news, promising a richer user experience and additional innovation," said Jan Volzke, head of global marketing at McAfee Mobile. "We're glad that Apple acknowledges the risk of mobile attacks. Just like Apple we want to make sure users are protected from malware and privacy attacks." According to the labs, the iPhone SDK to include security in it's design - more on this can be found over at www.avertlabs.com

Today Autodesk took a 360 degree turn with the launch of Autodesk U-Vis 360 Core

360-degree view of structures and urban areas -- From the company, Autodesk today announced the Autodesk U-Vis 360 Core, a new solution platform that integrates building design, manufacturing, mapping, and infrastructure data and displays it in a single visualization environment. Specifically tailored for federal and state and local governments, solutions built on the U-Vis 360 platform provide a complete and highly accurate 360-degree inside-outside-under view of any structure or urban environment with an easy-to-use interface. The U-Vis platform integrates 'smart' engineering data, filters it according to specific task and then applies the appropriate interface -- either a 2D web or a 3D game engine. The result is that non-technical users at all levels of federal and state and local governments can more easily integrate, visualize and experience complete precision information and data about an urban setting or structure in a digital environment-giving them immediate access and allowing them to make critical decisions more quickly and easily. U-Vis 360 enables users to incorporate existing data from commercial-off-the-shelf software, such as computer-aided design (CAD), geospatial information (GIS), building information modeling (BIM) and databases, to create complete and accurate urban environments for customers' business application and analysis needs. The U-Vis 360 Core supports the development of multiple solutions from the same sets of source data for both technical and professional users. See http://www.autodesk.com/uvis
