Location-based services coming on - some tips from the VCs

Some notes on venture capital (VC) for the LBS space... a session at the Navteq Connections event this week provided us with a chance to hear from some venture capitalists and their thoughts on LBS and location technologies. the following tips and comments were noted:
  • at ATT small company will often come in but in partnership with a large player like Nokia. they tend not to look at small companies but they also take all calls and return every one of them.
  • Advice – use a rock solid board of advisors... helps getting your company ready to talk to the VCs
  • What should you want money for? Be prepared to respond to this.
  • It helps to come to a VC as a member of a reputable developer community, like the Navteq dev community, Forum Nokia Pro etc... enter LBS challenge - this is validation.
  • What should a company bring… focus on something specific, don’t bring an idea that wants to accomplish all kinds of things. A clear product vision, where it's going, what your competitors are doing.
  • What’s hot… the rockstar team. Contacts, endorsements, What’s the distribution mechanism
  • Is there end-user demand, if so validate it. Pretty it up before the sale!
  • A Turn-off.. start ups that nickels over the valuation… 3.2 or 3.25
  • Say what you know, you don’t know, and maybe you’ll hire someone…
  • AT&T looks a lot at the enterprise – there’s a huge area looking at vehicle tracking
  • Most people in audience felt you don’t need a carrier in order to go to market with your application.
  • Is the VC interested in LBS? Yes - they have been burned in the past but this is the year for LBS. There is renewed interest in the area… look also at acquisitions… outside the US has definitely been hot… the nokia guy is bullish indeed!
  • at AT&T next year pretty much all new handsets will come with GPS!
  • And remember... There will be no web20 without a mobile extension, no web app should be created without a mobile client!

CTIA Lightning posts - Navteq Connections

During the recent Navteq Connections event, guests were treated to a special lunch hour speaker, Daniel Burrus – a technology visionary. He offered up some advice to developers and entrepreneurs (all are applicable to those chasing the LBS space). Some items to consider that I took away from the session:
- A predictable storm of disruption is coming, make sure you anticipate change, don’t respond to it.
- Hard trends are trends that WILL happen, soft trends MIGHT happen – don’t bet your company on soft trends
- Decomoditize and wrap a service around your offering
- Integrate old and new media
- Standards bring abundance
- Developers should note that people want memories!
- Take note of the 7 pillars or digital marketing: location, content, search, personalization, community, interactivity, presence.

To market to market... where to get that Nokia N95

I noticed that just today Nokia announced the opening of a new flagship store in Shanghai, China - FYI, the stores are Nokia's main POC for B to C and are quite important. There's a couple in the USA (New York , Chicago) but hardly enough. Why so? Well... its funny but Nokia is going gangbusters promoting the crap our of the N95 - this device was even recently billed as the official device of the Navteq LBS Challenge... ie. Nokia and Navteq want LBS developers to build apps to run on this device on the S60 environment. So what's the problem? Well... ever tried to buy an N95 in the USA! Currently, buying an unlocked device online (ebay or other) is likely the best way to go, unless you happen to be close to a flagship store. Otherwise, if you go into AT&T or T-Mobile they will likely look at you with a strange look and say "what's an N95"?? Getting to the consumer is a huge issue for Nokia smartphones here in North America and continues to get worse. Finally, get this... just this week I was at a Nokia S60 gig and the crew was giving away an N95 in a door prize (I didn't win.. darn it!) but the kicker... the Nokia/S60 people couldn't find one in San Francisco!! OUCH - one suggested resource for locating these and other products is - GPS-enabled product search, aka. GPS shopping! see www.s60.com / www.nokia.com

Dash navigation road testing... any testers out there?

Apparently Dash Navigation's test of some 2000 navigation units is complete. The company had 2000 drivers using the Internet connected navigation unit and they logged some 2 million miles, sent some 185,000+ yahoo! local searches etc... The device supports Wi-Fi connectivity but the preferred method of connection is a cellular data service via Jasper Wireless. We should be hearing more about the PND soon... I'm curious, did anyone out there have a Dash device for testing?? See more at www.dash.net

more on data resources for San Diego area wildfires

I received a message from sean in response to the earlier post I did about the San Diego data. Sean shares this with us regarding making data available concerning the San Diego fires. "We've been pulling together a good chunk of data on our end and I just posted up a blog entry with a list of what is currently up. See HERE
We are also working on an atlas page to provide some context and mashups for the data. We should have that up if not tomorrow over the weekend. The community has been uploading data into GeoCommons tagged as "San Diego fire". If people need a central place to make data accessible we are happy to host and convert it. You can dump KML, shapefiles or GeoRSS in. Hopefully it will be a helpful asset. Part of the motivation for GeoCommons was the volunteer work we did during Hurricane Katrina so hopefully it can be helpful this time around." See also here

Comments and observations from GeoInt 2007, San Antonio

Once again I didn't make it to GeoINT (Darn.. it looks like such an awesome event!) but I did get some comments from a reader who shared some observations... The coolest application on display in a booth had to be the face recognition scan in the Lockheed Martin booth. A camera did a face scan of people entering the booth, and then the photos were compared against a database of photos taken of every attendee at registration. The system was then able to flash the names of visitors up on a screen as they entered the booth.

Overall booth observation – I noticed that many companies are now using expensive video and multimedia productions in their booths to show off their products and services. The presentations were flashy and professionally done.

Best booth give-away was definitely GeoEye, which was handing out Margaritas on Tuesday afternoon. Needless to say, this drew quite a crowd.

Interesting observation by exhibitors – the keynote presentations and main sessions were so interesting that traffic was relatively light in the hall at times. (I’ve never heard anyone complain about presentations being too interesting.) Luckily, GEOINT had dedicated periods when there were no sessions going on, and the exhibit hall was packed during those times. I never heard a final attendance estimate, but the number was definitely up from last year.

Interesting observation by a military attendee – one officer noted with some discouragement that we now have the technical capabilities to integrate all types of data, but we still can’t overcome the problem of people not wanting to share their data.

sounds great! I also was on the phone the other day with an attendee and it sounded like the speaker lineup and attendance were both awesome! Congrats to the organizers... the moral of the story here... want booth traffic... forget the expensive booth babes, just give away Margaritas!! Ola - see http://www.geoint2007.com/

microsoft + facebook - I'm thinking mobile

Wow, interesting to note that Microsoft is buying 2% of facebook for more than 200 million! Given facebook's recent announcement at CTIA on the addition of a mobile application (making it easy to stay connected with your facebook page and your contacts) and the partnering up with RIM using the Blackberry device as the unofficial mobile platform, there's no doubt that a mobile app will likely come with some of the new devices that ship from microsoft next year running on Win Mobile 6. Want traffic for your apps.. think about developing on the facebook open API! Microsoft is quickly grabbing a larger piece of the pie in the mobile space in north America so having devices that enable users to connect with their favorite social network makes sense. A side note, Canadians are adopting facebook as a speed greater than most other countries. In Toronto its estimated that 1 in 4 people are on facebook!

 - Pedestrian directions

from CTIA Wireless and more on LBS

Just a a quick check-in from CTIA wireless in San Fran... on my agenda is LBS... it appears to also be on the monds of many of the people here as well. Yesterday I took inn Navteq's coming out party at an event billed as Navteq connections. The event was used to share and inform developers about what Navteq offers inn the LBS space, introduce partners, and convince people to take part in this year's LBS challenge. Of interest this quote I picked up on... the Nokia N95 - the official device of the LBS Challenge! No surprise given Nokia's recent purchace of Navteq.
