Mapping Crime stats & Sexual Predators

I've always been a big fan of publishing public information, particularly crime stats, location of sex offenders etc... up here in conservative Canada the rights of the criminals far outweigh those of the citizens so we don't have access to any of that information. A recent news announcement has featured yet another story about the Piedmont Police Department who has relaunched the interactive crime statistics feature on the city's Web site, enabling residents to gain information about major offenses in their neighborhood. The city's Web site is http://www.ci.piedmont.ca.us/. - You Google map hack fans out there will also be interested in the hack that I featured in our constantly growing Google Map Hack piece. The site uses the Google map API to track and locate sex offenders in Florida... very nice.. if I was moving into a new area I would definitely want this info.. kudos! Florida Sexual Predators - http://www.floridasexualpredator.com/ - A fantastic idea that really drives home to visitors the areas where sexual predators are living.  The site conveniently displays a push-pin at the address of all known sex offenders in Florida. Search by Zip code and the display gets updated. Click on the pin and a pop-up window reveals a picture of the offender, information about him/her and a direct link is provided to the FDLE database. Wow! I never knew there were convenient tools like this, which would enable me to find like-minded sexual predators. This will be a big help when planning the next convention! =)

Ermm... in all seriousness, I think this is a questionable idea. First, the American "justice" system is not perfect (nor is Canada's, or anyone else's), and you may be putting up people who are actually innocent, regardless what a jury of their peers had to say (nobody's perfect).

Additionally, this seems a very self-righteous thing to do - the listing of certain types of criminals in a public forum. It is tantamount to the stocks in medieval Europe; you display criminals in the streets so all of the non-criminals can point, laugh, throw fruit, and feel smugly better about themselves.

What if they did that to litterers? Loiterers? Jaywalkers? 'Ridiculous,' you say? Well, where do we draw the line? If we allow this kind of public abuse for one crime, we can hardly say it's excessive for another.

does anyone know if this information can be found for British Columbia, Canada... i've tried looking since i have nephews, nieces i would be worried about... canadian law still must say they 'perverts' have rights too... but there must be an 'undercover' group out there that posts this information anyways, does anyone know where i can find that...
thanks for the help, and i'm glad the states has such active laws, against these sorts of crimes... for a country, CANADA, and yes i'm proud ot live here, but for a country that is so progressive, we can be too much, when it comes to protecting the rights of our criminals... total bs. keep up the good site...
