Notes on Mapdex and a wish to search it from ArcGIS Explorer

One GIS blogger is lobying ESRI to include a "Mapdex Search task" for ArcGIS explorer.. when you think about it it's a great idea... mind you, if ArcGIS explorer is to connect users with map services then no doubt the product is to be tightly integrated with the Geography network and other directories that are likely managed by ESRI. But looking at Mapdex you'd have to think that this would be a win-win for all should the mamoth directory of web services be integrated into some of the ESRI product search tasks. If your not familiar with Mapdex, according to the site, "its a global index of 1,827 servers, serving 33,568 map services, containing over 400,000 GIS Layers, covering more than 4,000,000 columns". See http://www.mapdex.org/search/ - as a sample test, we looked for DRGs for Seattle, WA and found hits on 16 servers... nice! Thanks to James at SpatiallyAdj. (http://www.spatiallyadjusted.com) for starting a rant on this topic! On a side note, my condolences go out to all you Michigan fans out there who had to endure the Alamo bowl last night and watch what had to be the worst College refs that have ever been recorded on ESPN... The wolverines choked but the refs gave this game away... how can any game end on a defensive penalty???? Here's to the Irish stomping on OSU!
