Team Phoenix to compete as a finalist in Microsoft’s Imagine Cup Competition with taxibuses

What a cool story out of Telogis. A group of four students from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, calling themselves Team Phoenix, have been selected as a finalist to compete in the Imagine Cup 2008 worldwide finals to take place in Paris July 3–8, 2008. This year the Microsoft competition is challenging young programmers around the world to “Imagine a world where technology enables a sustainable environment.”

At the core of Team Phoenix’s Taxibus solution is GeoBase mapping software by Telogis. The software solution uses GeoBase to determine the routes for taxibuses to take and to give a powerful visualization of the simulation. See more about the app in the news

LightPole allows Movable Type bloggers to geo-tag their entries

LightPole, Inc., a mobile application service provider focused on the "Long Tail" publishing market, co-developed a Movable Type plug-in with SixApart that allows Movable Type bloggers to geo-tag their entries, add and manage related points of interest (POIs) and publish feeds that can be used to create LightPole channels – seamlessly delivering content to their readers' mobile phones.

Details... The GeoType Plug-In for Movable Type allows you to associate locations with blog entries. It creates locations for each blog entry, which are pushpin points that appear on a single map. Also, a map can be shown which displays all of the locations for the entire blog. Locations can be found using addresses or by scrolling the map, so you do not need to find or lookup the coordinates for your location like many other plug-ins force you to do. The plug-in also allows for these blog entries to be published to mobile devices using the LightPole Publishing System.

To download the plug-in point to your browser see http://plugins.movabletype.org/geotype/

For additional instruction, check out the documentation at http://blog.lightpole.net/plugins/docs/index.html

Twitter Goes over capacity again and again

Here we go again... Twitter is once again over capacity due to too much volume. The company has been slammed a fair bit lately and the constant slow through put and messages like this aren't going to help much. I guess I'll go over to Jaiku (www.jaiku.com) for now! Obviously this is due to the growing number of users that seek to have 5000+ freinds and followers etc... this problem is also going to hit facebook as well.

QuincyFloodInfo providesd information for the Mid-West flood of 2008

This comes to me from Shane in the Mid-west... Mid-West GIS, Inc, out of Quincy, Illinois recently developed the website www.QuincyFloodInfo.com in order to gather information for the flood of 2008 on one website. The site hosts weather, river gauge, photos, maps, archives, webcams, and contact information for assistance. During the crucial periods of the flood, more than 1,000 hits per day were being logged. It became a successful tool for many local residents, business owners, and government entities that needed updated information on a daily basis. It is the plan of Mid-West GIS, Inc. to use this same technology in the future for other disaster and emergency management issues. For more information you may contact Shane McDermott at shane@mid-westgis.com or (217) 222-7793.
